Using Chain as Tie-Downs.
The one thing all of these chains have in common is that all can be used as tie-downs. The majority of chain used for tie-downs is Grade 70, also known as transport chain. It is easily recognized because of the gold-coloured plating which distinguishes it from other chains; however, we recommend that the operator verify the grade by its embossed identification.

Although the National Safety Code allows the use of coil chain of grade 30 we do not recommend using them, however, they all will have to be tagged.
National Safety Code Standard 10 – Cargo Securement Changes Effective January 1, 2010
Requirement to use tie-downs marked with Working Load Limit.
Please Note: Even tho the chain tiedown may be tagged, the chain will need to be stamped in accordance with NACM by the manufacturer and the inspector will need to be able to see it present.
Stamping: Grade and manufacturers ID.
Safety should always be our number one concern so let’s make sure all the chain tie-downs are in good working condition. If you’re not sure of any part of these securement practices, please call WorkSafeBC or Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators for more assistance.
