How to Read Binder Markings
When a binder shows two sizes, such as 5⁄16 to 3⁄8, it indicates the range of chain diameters the binder is engineered to tension safely.
This system dates back to the earlier practice of matching a smaller Grade 70 chain with the next size up in Grade 43. The approach remains common because it is practical and easy to follow.
Always match the working load limit of the binder with the working load limit of the chain you are using. The entire securement system is always limited by the lowest rated component, whether binder, chain, hooks, or anchor points.
VGD Recommendation
Chain used for transport must be marked with a legible working load limit, either stamped on the chain or on an attached tag.
Although any chain grade may technically be used when it is marked and correctly rated, VGD recommends Grade 70 only for commercial and highway tie downs due to its consistent quality, higher strength, and superior durability compared with older grades.
