Read the Grade
The ASTM A536 grade designation describes minimum mechanical properties. For 65-45-12, the numbers represent minimum tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.
Specialty Steel | Ductile Iron
65-45-12 continuous cast ductile iron bar supplied from Vancouver area inventory. Excellent machinability, consistent properties and dependable performance for machined industrial components, with cut to length service and full material traceability.
65-45-12 Ductile Iron
Vanguard stocks continuous cast 65-45-12 ductile iron for machining, manufacturing and replacement components where strength, machinability and consistent material performance matter.
ASTM A536
65-45-12 ductile iron contains nodular graphite in a primarily ferritic matrix. This structure provides excellent machinability, good surface finishes and a useful combination of strength, ductility, impact resistance and fatigue performance.

Typical Applications
Understanding Ductile Iron
Ductile iron gets its properties from both its graphite structure and the surrounding metal matrix. Understanding the grade helps explain why 65-45-12 is widely used for machined industrial components.
The ASTM A536 grade designation describes minimum mechanical properties. For 65-45-12, the numbers represent minimum tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.
In ductile iron, graphite forms as rounded nodules rather than the flake shaped graphite found in grey iron. This structure reduces the tendency for cracks to start and propagate, allowing the material to provide greater ductility.
65-45-12 has a primarily ferritic matrix with small amounts of pearlite. This structure provides excellent machinability and supports good surface finishes in machined components.
The combination of tensile strength, yield strength and elongation makes 65-45-12 useful where machined components require strength without giving up the ductility associated with nodular iron.
Stock, Cutting and Traceability
Vanguard supports ductile iron requirements with local inventory, automatic saw cutting and material documentation from the original bar through to your completed order.
Selected diameters of 65-45-12 continuous cast ductile iron are held in Vancouver area inventory to support individual requirements and continuing production demand.
