Understanding Alloy Conditions
Alloy steel can be supplied in different conditions depending on the grade, diameter and intended application. The supplied condition affects machining, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerance and any additional heat treatment that may be required.
Material is annealed to reduce hardness, improve machinability and prepare the steel for machining or additional heat treatment. The surface retains its hot rolled finish.
Commonly associated with: 4140 alloy steel bar
Material is supplied in a heat treated condition with stresses reduced after treatment. Mechanical properties depend on the grade, specification and section size.
Commonly associated with: 4140, 4340 and 4145H Modified
Bar is turned, ground and polished to provide a clean finished surface with closer diameter control than standard hot rolled bar. It is commonly selected for shafting and precision components.
Commonly associated with: 4140 precision finished shafting
Low carbon alloy grades such as 8620 and 3312 are designed for carburizing. This allows a hard, wear resistant surface to be developed while retaining a tougher core.
Commonly associated with: 8620 and 3312
Confirm the complete specification before ordering. Grade, condition, diameter, mechanical requirements and applicable standards should be reviewed together. Final material selection remains the responsibility of the purchaser and project engineer.
